This poem shows the contrast between the pure and tender love of Leyli and Majnun and the strict moral traditions that existed at that time. The way Majnun expressed his love was unacceptable to other people. He was abandoned by his family, rejected by some friends, and looked upon as a bad man. So Majnun ran away to the desert and began to live with the wild animals.
Leyli was able to hide her feelings. She obeyed her parents and married a man she didn't love. Although she seemed to be happy on the outside, there was a struggle in her heart between her parents' wishes and her love for Majnun. Because of this she died. Majnun heard about Leyli's death and went to her grave where he died too. Majnun's great love for Leyli was incomprehensible to medieval society.
